A single cell seems to act like a robot that just reacts to stimuli.
How does it happen that by adding multiple "robots" like this we get "mind", "consciousness", "cognition" and all of those other complex behaviors?

I tried reading philosophy for these answers but got nowhere. What is the best understanding science has of this? What should I be reading?
