Around 25 years ago, when one of the American Mars rovers was doing its thing, they had a similar thought but I don't remember that anything came of it. They found what they thought might be dead micro-organisms on some rock or something along those lines, which would again have the same, simple conclusion: micro-organisms exist on other planets, we are not alone (sorta).
