Dark forest makes a lot of sense when we think of weapons that are fired at the speed light, so that opponents have no chance of retaliation.
It makes a lot of sense to have your AI weapons search for civilisations, and as soon as one is detected (by, for example, altering their sun) the time between finding it and firing a light-speed laser at their entire stellar neighbourhood can be less than a fraction of a second.
Your empire is the only one in the galaxy, type 3. There are no type 2 or type 1 civilisations because they are all detected before the point where they can build light speed armageddon weapons.
