How to git gud @ math?

I sat down w/ linear algebra today and 4 pages in the book asks me to show if (x+y(sqrt(2)) is a subfield of complex field, where x and y are rational. I understand that to git gud at math you must do the exercises as well, but what if you get stuck? Did Euler and Lagrange ever get stuck? Do I need a special left-brain to do these type of proofs wicked fast?
