QGIS is free so you can download it now, work through some tutorials, and give yourself a project to work on in your free time.
>t. geologist/GIS tech>>12113371+1 on the programming. Learn Python and databases and you'll get a lot further. A lot of colleges offer a GIS certificate which only requires ~6 courses, and that's enough to land a lot of jobs.
