What branch of math is your friend doing? In general windows supports more software, so I'd guess windows is better in that way. If you're doing computationally heavy stuff, though, Linux has a better scheduler and less bloat.

Not unless you're often doing heavy-duty numerical stuff such as exploring conjectures in number theory or working in some fields of applied maths. But some distros make reliable, efficient systems for someone who needs to get shit done and not get distracted by Windows fucking up or updating b/c whenever it feels like it or whatever.
