>>12112161The Scientific Method. It all starts with a question to answer.
1. Your field of study should have a specific question that is used as the basis for all research. For example, with Computer Science, the question is "What can be automated?" That would be a good point to start.
2. Once you figure out your field's question, then you can start looking into sub fields. They too will have a primary question as the basis of research. Depending on your level of experience, you might have to get really deep. For example:
- Undergrads will typically study historical information from the beginning of the field
- Graduates tend to answer questions that arise relatively recently.
- PhD tend to answer questions that are brand new.
3. Do research on prominent figures that answered questions. Gather questions and do some exploratory analysis. Narrow down your list of questions to something you find interesting.
Once you have a question, use the Scientific Method. Perform experiments. Get results. Publish said results.
You can either do something no one has ever done before, use results from someone else's work in a different application/way, or give up and flip burgers...
