its interesting that what can seem to be a paradox like x = !x can in some context make sense. repeatedly replacing the rule generates infinite !!!!s in space. In time, it generates a toggling value with each update rule application. I believe this behavior is at the root of our universe, the resolution of the ultimate paradox of eternal nothingness itself being a something (ie nothing = !nothing) or if you prefer a spiritual interpretation, god = !god.
