I think it's a plot of the average frequency for 1000 minor alleles in the populations.

So, for some novel alleles Brits have at a frequency of .0325 vs Chinese at .0175. I may be incorrect.

The paper seems self explanatory, I think for the NW and Northern Euros it's probably the lack of skin pigmentation. The Italian and Spanish it's just UV exposure. Don't know why this needs a thread.
