General relativity for example depends on purely mathematical axioms (speed of photons is constant) for which the only justification is our current technological inability to detect the possible differences. Quantum theory is even worse. Handwavily derived mathematical constructs such as "spontaneous symmetry breaking" are mistaken for physical reality just because they coincidentally happen to capture one aspect of a much larger and more mysterious nature of elementary particles while yielding many more unsolved questions at the same time.
