dude submarines can go beneath the poles, a hurricane does rock the water quite a bit but that turbulence goes maybe 20 meters deep and it would just rock the boat at that depth, they have no problem sailing under

Yeah, SSNs would be fine. It might suck for a non-nuclear sub depending on its submerged range, though. Coming up to snorkel depth to charge the batteries would be extremely unpleasant.
