If height is normally distributed
And 6ft is 80th percentile
And I randomly sample X people
And in my sample 6ft is 30th percentile
What are the odds of this happening

To make the math simpler, let's just say 6ft is 2 standard deviations above the mean and in your x person sample, 6ft is two standard deviations below the mean. This would imply that the mean of your sample is 4 standard deviations above the population mean. Sample standard is proportional to population standard deviation by 1/sqrt(n) where n is the sample size; so 4 population standard deviations will be 4*sqrt(x) sample deviations. So the probability will be equal to drawing a value greater than 4*sqrt(x) from a normal distribution (mu=0,sigma=1). Essentially, the probability is very small.
