it depends on several factors - how exposed to oxygen are the rags? how crumbled are the rags? how wet are they? what are they surrounded by?

oily rags laid out neatly on top of a wet or inflammable surface wont' start a fire. oily rags balled up in the middle of a bunch of dry leaves or cardboard, will.

I bunched them thinking that would allow heat to accumulate. No Joy. Then I tried rolling it tightly and allowed to to dry and even put a thermometer in the middle to monitor the temperature. Nothing happened. I'm starting to suspect something has been done to reduce the flammability of this product.
