You'll be surprised how tedious it is to check using a calculator so it's just easier to do it in your head then to constantly check if your right or not

Mental math is something you just have to develop.
The more math you do, especially involving numbers and number theory, the easier mental math gets.
It's mostly about understanding the compositions of numbers and manipulating those to get an easier solution.

Some problems absolutely need that, since number theory problems can involve things like 2^100 (mod 15). which isn't easy to calculate.
