Which country is the best in AI research? If you could choose where to pursue a Ph.D in AI after graduating in Physics, where would you go? I've read that China is pretty strong, Tsinghua university especially, but I don't know if it's true or it's just a meme. It seems that Japan isn't as good.

China is not strong. The government dropped a lot of money on AI research, so it looks okay on the surface. They even boasted about their ambition to be the best in the world, but they soon toned it down, because they realized that’s not going to happen. Besides, they have to send their people abroad in the first place for them to become good researchers.

US, Canada and the UK are the best and I say that as a continental European. These three are almost indistinguishable, because their research institutes are so interconnected.

That's an interesting point of view. I also am a continental European, and I really dislike the Anglo-American world; unfortunately it is true that they are the leaders in worldwide research. I hope the EU can get its shit together and improve, but I unfortunately think it won't happen.

Canada has Geoffrey Hinton and Yoshua Bengio, two of the three “godfathers of deep learning” (deep learning is almost solely responsible for the recent AI boom, and these guys happened to have bet on the right horse years ago, when it wasn’t yet popular) who were awarded the Turing Award for their contributions. You and me both. If I had to choose right now though, I would do research in Canada. They’re most like continental Europe, especially in Quebec.

The people of Quebec are among some of the most stuck up and arrogant people I've had the displeasure of dealing with. I've never met a population of people with more unwarranted self importance than Québécois, not to mention actually fairly racist. They fancy themselves French despite speaking the most DISGUSTING, GUTTURAL mangling of the language to exist.
So in other words, probably very European.

I plan to keep living in Italy, but I would enjoy a PhD abroad. But well, I still have like three years before graduating. I also don't know if I want to stay in research, but a PhD can probably help also in industry.
