People in western countries have collectively adopted, by will or otherwise, a destructive, backwards culture. Intellectualism simply won't thrive in such an environment, thus forcing true intellects to go underground, flee the harmful environment, or be snuffed out by the bloodthirsty mob as has happened countless times throughout history. This isn't unprecedented at all. Establish and maintain a positive culture conducive to scientific and intellectual progress and things will be different. At this point though, that would genuinely take rebellion/war, as the aforementioned bloodthirsty mob are openly hostile towards scientific progress and intellectualism (whether they're aware of that or not) and would do everything in their power to destroy the budding utopia. Look at what happened to Germany.
