Not many jobs pay you 100,000$+ after being there for four years then allow you to retire in 20. Average retirement is 56,000$ + health insurance. So you'd need to average around 180,000$ per year 25 from 45. Very few STEM students see that money early in their careers. You could do my job w/ a high school diploma but bureaucracy requires a BS/BA to commission and a MS/MBA/etc. to be competitive for promotions in the higher ranks of officers.
