What language should I learn for my PhD?

I have to choose a foreign language. I'm thinking either French or German. No I won't learn Chinese.

If those are your choices, go with German.
In addition to being able to read a lot of based literature from the 1930's and 1940's, a great deal of original technical scientific papers are in German.

1) Is there any untranslated literature in your field of study in the language? The only time I ever encountered untranslated literature in my own PhD study it was in Russian, which was not the language I chose for my exam.
2) How easy is the language for you to learn? And are there any side benefits for learning the language? For me, French would have been simpler, since I had already studied it for 5 years in High School (& Middle School). However, it would have been worthwhile brushing up on German, because a professor offered to take me with him to Germany for his sabbatical (I *think* his motives were pure, but I did sometimes get men hitting on me back in those days.)
