One of the major difficulties with JWST was developing a structure which was stiff enough to hold the alignment of the optics over days. If you try to make a telescope out of spiderfab bullshit it won't be sturdy enough. NIAC awards are pie-in-the-sky nonsense, which never actually go into development.
