Most viruses are not lythic, i.e. they don't make cells explode. They're just foreign contaminants which the immune system detects and starts wrecking shit up, including healthy undamaged cells. The infected cell itself detects damage and kills itself, increasing food for bacteria which is what starts complications.
In other words, they're pieces of dust that make cells make more pieces of dust.
