Also, "experts" claimed the San Andreas fault could only generate a max M7.8, but now they believe M8.3 is possible which would wreak devastation on SoCal. But, some argue the reason for the big quakes, Landers, Hector Mine, Ridgecrest, Lone Pine, are because the San Andreas fault is locked between the Salton Sea and Fort Tejon and a new plate boundary is being formed headed out in the desert north of the Sierra along Walker Lane. So maybe there wont be a M8.3 in the LA area, just large quakes going out into the desert forming the new plate boundary.
