Provoking reactions from people is fun for attention whores. Its like how some kids will break rules just to get their parents' and teachers' attention. Early humans did not have the social order that rewards such behaviors, they tended to ostracize people which is the opposite of what attention whores want. Most people seek attention in some form as a reassurance of belonging to their social group.
