Are there any realistic non-human-like possibilities for technologically capable aliens?
Fish can't invent fire, cows can't hold tools, birds can't fly with heavy brains. Basically they'd need to be a terrestrial tree dweller to evolve thumbs and start down the tool use path. Need to breathe oxygen because nitrogen and fluorine are useless, need to be carbon based because that's the only option for complicated chemical structures.
