Mechatronics: really good as advertised or a meme?

Anons, I'm going to college next year and it seems like Mechatronics has a little bit of everything you need these days (mechanics, electrical/electronics and some computer science).
Is it really that good? Or is it better to choose an engineering course from one of those three fields?

Mechatronics Engineer here. I got a degree in Electronics Engineering, got into the field, then after generating experience for my resume I got into mecha.
It really depends on what you want to do and where you live (or are willing to move to). Technically a mecha degree is the surface of different disciplines. You can do a lot but you don't go really heavy into one field. It will limit your options unless you can jump in with a smaller team/company that needs an all-in-one engineer.
Otherwise, you can get a common degree in one field (or dual major if you have the ability), then drum up experience to pad your resume like I did.

But ALWAYS KEEP LEARNING! Even after you graduate and get a job, buy a fucking book on some new technology and learn it. I've been doing that for a decade and I can claim experience on software/hardware that has been released since graduating college.

They learn a bit of everything but don't go nearly as deep into any subject as engineers studying them exclusively. IMHO employers usually aren't looking for a jack of all trades. They tend to think of people as only being able to do one thing. If they need mechanical engineering work done they hire a mechanical engineer, not someone who's so-so at it and has three other skills that aren't needed.

its basically a different dicipline, a mechanical engineer most likely knows nothing about control systems or EE which you need for doing shit like robotics in a factory setting, which is mechatronics.
