By high school I knew that was entirely unrealistic, but I still thought we would be working towards it, that perhaps a base on the moon or even mars was entirely feasible. Science is about learning. Scientists don't know everything at the start, they have to learn as things go on. So mistakes happen as they gain more knowledge, that's literally how this works.
