I mean oceans are really big and I don't think a bunch of waste and plastic can do significant damage to their environement.

unfortunately that 1% houses a lot of important stuff. we don't really care about anglerfish, but we can see the effects on things such as reefs
also, ocean currents tend to aggregate waste in certain regions. so while the ocean is big, we create ultra-toxic segments of the ocean that can disrupt local fauna. for those that are highly localized, this can be a death sentence.
