The absolute disastrous state of research.

Why and when did it come to this?

I love research, but it feels like unis and the whole funding research system was made to feast on the souls of grad students. My MSc felt like a hostage situation and while I'm looking forward to my PhD I know it will take a toll on my mental health.

Any anecdotes /sci/?

Research is a profession. It's not a passion.
You're getting paid to do stuff with clear tasks and goals.

Yes.

But as a grad student there's a status quo established by every faculty. You're paid a misery for your work and yet you still pay tuition fees. It's not a job per say. Vacations are up to the PI and there's virtually no safeguard preventing you to lose your jobs.

Once you're a PI yourself or went to the private sector you're a full fledged Research Scientist, having an gross income of 115k or more.

Here in leaf land you stop paying fees after your predoc exam. Some PI are better than others but you don't really get to see their faces until it's too late.

the difficult transition is because students go from receiving judgement from teachers who care that you were thinking properly and prefer your work to show off your thought process, to peers who don't give a shit about how you think and only want to know the results. Often times students learn to work as a method of thinking, when really the work should be done after the thinking.

My PI is similar. I think people coming into grad school (in the US) don't know what its like/to expect and so are naive to the choices they make, and the system is built so that you could be a great scientists while being absolutely horrible to you grad students
Some grad students let the PI pick the committee (or make recommendations rather)- which works great if your PI has your best interest at heart (they know who is shitty to have on your committee and who isn't), but some use it to fill the slots with people who will lock-down the PIs grip over the grad student
I think students also don't realize how much "power" they have to say no. Once in, grad schools will do EVERYTHING to keep you, because it looks really bad on them if a grad student fails out. I've seen someone stop showing up to class and do basically 0 work/research, and the grad school made an exception for a No-Pass grade (supposed to instantly kick you out) and keep him in anyways. Your relationship with your PI might suffer, but you can say no, and make sure you talk to your committee about the situation. Your PI can't really do anything.
You get a good PI, things can go pretty smoothly for you.
That said, when everything is failing for 6 months straight, it all sucks, all of it, no matter how much support you have.
