The real reason is because the hairs become imbued with the smell and we like the smell because stinky stuff makes us horny

I wonder if people smelled that bad before we invented soaps. Maybe if you go long enough without soap your body will regulate itself and the bacteria on it. Similar to how (supposedly) your hair will produce less oil if you don't use shampoo for some time. Maybe when you use soap, you also get rid of the "good" bacteria that would regulate the "bad", smell inducing bacteria.

I'm guessing it's sexual signaling. The kinds and ratios of oils these glands produce will cultivate different strains of bacteria and hence produce different smells. This could be used to broadcast important information about immune health and sexual comparability
