Radar somehow fucks up and starts detecting itself?

What causes something like this to happen? Any radar people here?

Seems like a sensor malfunction. Given the size of the pattern and how much it is rotating, someone else would've noticed it if it were something physical.

It's probably this, but I don't quite get how the systems fuck up that much. Assuming the problem is locally inside the radar, why does it record readings that are like 100 miles away?

Then again I have absolutely no idea how the software inside one of those things operate.

Someone pressed the wrong set of buttons. It happens.

Radar has a far range, especially if it is high up on a tower and is trained to look at stuff in the sky. Here's the US ICBM early warning radar and their ranges for comparison.

I know it has massive range, but if the error is locally inside the sensor, why would it interpret the error being so far away, instead of like 60cm?

The sensor isn't a hundred miles long. You might be grossly out of your element here when it comes to transducers. Its like if you had a scratch on a camera lens and took a picture 10 miles away. That tiny scratch hardly a cunt har wide is going to look relatively monsterous.

I don't know anything about radars, but the problem occurred for over an hour. You can see a repeating pattern at certain degrees. I can't help but wonder if they were tuning or rebooting.

If your eye is the radar and my finger is the error and I put my finger in front of your eye, I prevent you from seeing far away. The error is also registered close, and far away, because the whole sensor is nonsense.
Or say your eye is somehow glitching, sending bad signla to your brain, that signal will include far away still
