A bit more of an abstract question, leading off of OP's scenario: How much wear would be generated flipping a coin a million times? Assume a perfect flipping situation, machine-like efficiency, random orientation on the thumb each flip.
Let's assume OP's coin is a US 1942 quarter, 90% silver, 10% copper, just because that will make it softer and more liable to wear. And let's say that it's falling on white oak, a relatively firm material. What would OP's coin look like by the time he was done flipping? Would it be noticeably dinged up, or would he have wasted his time and made no impact on its appearance?
