Ignoring (or being shut out of) a part of humanity that otherwise takes up an extreme amount of time and energy leaves quite a lot of room to expand in other areas.
Also, brain size has correlations to both intelligence and mental health issues, such as bipolar disorder and schizophrenia. Bigger brain = probably smarter, but also probably brain problems to some degree. To bring us right around, brain problems often lead to social outcasting, which then leads to finding "other" ways to fill one's day.
