hey /sci/ i am a particle physics postdoc working on an LHC experiment. i’ve noticed that you guys never have any particle physics posts aside from “string theory hate” threads (e.g. sabine hossenfelder threads.)

so my question is: do you have anything useful to say? like, what are your opinions on BSM physics? any ideas out there besides poo-pooing ST?

good, wrt not knowing Sabine. she sucks. anyhow every tabletop experiment paper i’ve ever seen that claims to have relevance to BSM physics is riddled with systematics and uncontrolled backgrounds and thus they are easy to poke holes in. and so far every single one has had a serious hole that debunks their BSM claims. at least in HEE we have consistently given null results with rare exceptions due to genuine background fluctuations, as opposed to tabletop guys who always have to eat their shoes

I'm partly memeing, because tabletop can't replace the LHC. but we are able to forbid certain SUSY/BSM theories approaching the PeV energy scale.
systematics are getting pushed down and down with developments. people are figuring out convenient tricks to cancel systematics, and recent developments in atomic/molecular control mean there's a lot of development to be had once these experiments start up

i respect that and i think a lot of what “precision tabletop” guys do is great. i always think back to Alain Aspect as a great table-topper.

but at the same time i think there is a “purity” in LHC-style experiments that you guys shit on, and you shouldn’t. and i think you said as much. there is purity by design of the experiment and not through “tricks”. so just let us be

but you use tricks too. you don't observe the higgs, you observe the decay products. we don't observe a supersymmetric particle, we observe the electron's EDM

observing decay products is a much less “tricky” trick than your background eliminating method. it is straight physics and not some clever “let’s interfere this against that” thing which is super sensitive to how well you can turn your many knobs
