Because you have to pay for the book in order to get an access code to the required homework. Instead of listing the homework on a personal site like a normal person, many professors decide to make it so you absolutely have to buy the book because it comes without it you cannot see the homework for the course. It is such BS and I hate it.
I am hoping some sort of civil war kicks off so that this madness can end once and for all. If I'm lucky the guy who designs the captchas will die violently in it.

Im honestly perplexed at the american system. I went 3 yrs undergrad and 2 masters here without buying a single book. Any i needed were in the library. i bought a couple of books because i liked them, but fuckin .... hell the absolute state of american universities.

Get the book online for free. I've already got the pdf downloaded on my computer. As for what is obviously going to be an access code for WebAssign, you can buy that directly on the website, without the code. You'll end up spending no more than $100-$120 or whatever it is. This is still a scam, but it's not 900 fucking dollars. My professor was nice enough to send us an email that said we could buy the code on the website.

Life is a ponzi scheme. Literally everything about the system is designed to take from the bottom and give to the top, and if you have the audacity to try and live outside the system you WILL be locked up or killed for it.

You actually get the book "for free" if once you purchase the code. You don't technically need to download it else where. Also $125 is good for the entire year. $100 if you just want access for a semester.
