I like to take notes as I read, I don't write everything down. I'm in nursing school, so I condense the information and make notes about information that I don't already know or understand well, and I don't like to write word for word from the book-I like to explain it in my own words. I use a lot of short hand. I find visual aids are helpful for what I'm studying and how I learn best, and I'm pretty artistic, so I tend to draw visuals to help reinforce the material as well. Sometimes I use sticky notes to further explain information. If a study guide or outline is provided ill number it and place those numbers in my notes where it applies in my notes. I also color code, so if Test A is on 6 chapters, I'll use pink for all my chapter names and I'll use a pink high lighter and color the bottom of/edges of my stack of index cards so I can keep them organized. I keep all my notes in a three ring, organized by dividers-usually by test then ill use sticky dividers for each chapter within the tests. Also, after reading and before writing, I take a pause to explain what I just read in my head to myself, to help retain it and apply it.
