If you can make strong connections with people at research institutes during grad school it’s definitely one of the more fulfilling bio paths you can take.100% this. The funding situation means there it is more limited, but certainly not impossible.

Our marine bio program had "intro to marine science" basically be a weed-out class for dolphin-lovers, making it tough as shit and about all the wonderfully boring parts of marine bio.
Really cool field though.
