What if we are the only (intelligent) species in the universe? Or at least in our galaxy. How does that change things? Should we focus more on keeping our position and accelerate our expansion into our solar system and then the Milky Way?

I'm not clamming that we actually are and I know that mathematically speaking we are probably not alone at all but I just want to see what /sci/ thinks of this thought experiment.
