Of course, it was relieved by mass die-off in the case of the plague or by mass migration in the case of colonialism. But European societies in general are more resistant, usually what happens is the male suicide rate increases drastically for a while, then goes back down, the remaining males are apparently less affected by overpopulation.

Places like Hungary, Poland, Belarus, Serbia, Czech, ect. have lower digit ratios in men, these places also coincidentally have a history of communism with higher political and economic strife, they also have a significantly higher rate of male suicide. All of these are factors which in the past have led to lower population, and would thus have fewer malthusian factors and smaller population density than which Western Europe has had in the past. So now that population growth is pretty much completely unchecked everywhere in the world, Western Europe and by extension US whites are more balanced and have fewer problems.
I predict we're going to see massive amounts of male childlessness, suicide, die-off, ect. in the coming years from China, India and the rest of the world where critical population densities were never reached historically. Then the next generation will be much more stable in terms of population expansion and compression.
