There are methane lakes on the surface. I'm wondering if it'll be possible to just take large ships, fill up a large container and ship it back to the moon, asteroid field and even earth but probably not cost effective for Earth. I do know that if we mine asteroid fields, we'll need the fuel off of titan.

I just figure, an A.I. guided shit, slingshotted from Earth to Mars and then around Jupiter back to Titan, spun around and dropped into a lake, pipe it up into the compartment and shoot off a tube. The problem is finding the metals and producing canisters essentially in space. But there is an abundance of metals in the nearby asteroid field. The difficulty is manufacturing in space and sucking up the methane and sending it back. It's 100% possible, but it actually becomes more of a software challenge and maintaining and pushing updates through space to your robots. I do not think humans should be involved with such an operation.

Titan has the potential to be a fucking paradise of the highest order, esp if you have fusion energy,but even fission will do just fine. Low radiation, abundant water and carbon resources, you can fly like a god damned bird,gentle gravity well and a dummy thicc atmosphere to scrub off excessive velocity....it's an astrophysical wonder.

We need to push for experiments in rotational surface gravity augmentation on Mars, since I think it's likely any long term titan inhabitants will need it.

you do know Jupiter belts out a SHIT-TON of radiation right? The surfaces of any of the moons are going to uninhabitable for a very long time, probably forever. And it has water? tf?

Most any piece of technology can be equipped with a small nuclear heating system, or can be insulated to prevent it from freezing up. Batteries will definitely need to be kept warm with a substantial layer of insulation.

What's that things power source? I assume it has an RTG but it seems kind of unsafe to dump active fissile material in an environment that may or may not have delicate forms of life.

Also how are they planning on getting around the 3 hour latency? For a rover that kind of delay isn't a big deal but a submersible vehicle could get destroyed in 3 hours without input. It would have to be highly automated and capable of making safe decisions on it's own.

It's Ganymede that you're thinking of, and there may be even more moons than that with subsurface oceans, including Triton. We even have dwarf planets with them, like Ceres and possibly even Pluto. So really, water's somewhat abundant in this solar system.

I'm pretty sure most of these are thought to have more ocean water than we have here on Earth too, which is insane.

It's probably the most abundant complex molecule by a huge fucking margin in the entire solar system. Earth's water content is actually quite small compared to the water content of worlds in the outer solar system. Even the Moon has millions of tons of water ice trapped in craters, and Mars and Venus both probably once had hydrospheres. Massive oceans are most likely normal, and worlds without oceans closer in to their parent stars are more unlikely. Earth being close in to the Sun but still retaining it's oceans is the most unlikely of all; by all rights the Sun should have cooked off all our water a billion years ago. We are in the literal sweet spot, not too big, not too small, just enough heat but not too much.

But at any rate, I wouldn't be surprised if as humanity explores other solar systems we find out that most life (simple or otherwise) propagates on icy moons and worlds far out from their star, and Earth is extremely unusual for being a life bearing planet so close to it's star.

I feel like I don't know enough to comment though I will say that there's probably a decent enough chance of exomoons being potential habitable that a lot of people forget about though it's not like we have the technology to really find any of them right now.

There are several designs under consideration and they usually use either a heated drill or they take in ice and turn it into hot water.

They all require a lot more power than a normal space probe though to generate all that heat.

The real issue is communication. There isn't any real way to communicate with a probe that's dozens or possibly hundreds of kilometers below an ice sheet. The thing would have to be mostly automated and would have to be able to surface somehow to transmit data back to an orbiter to send back to Earth. I don't think a sub-surface icy-moon submersible probe is really do-able yet. Too many unknowns, too many technical issues.

We need to focus on just landing shit on other worlds, particularly worlds that don't have atmospheres for convenient aero-braking, before we attempt something like getting a probe under Enceladus' or Europa's ice sheets.

Also the probe in that pic is intended for use in the methane lakes in Titan, a much more realistic goal atm.
