I recommend your undergrad to be in CS if you prefer the SWE side of things or in MechE if you prefer building the thing. Any degree or no degree is possible but CS/MechE is the majority. You'll need internships which is where the nepotism comes into play.
After undergrad you'll likely move onto a heavy ML/AI PhD program and publish a bunch of crap papers and get a graduate level internship which turns into a full time job offer.
Sure the pay is good but depending on the company you'll be pulling 60+ hour weeks. So hourly it's still good but not that great to alternatives like product manager.
