I think what you're looking for is an "introductory" textbook. they make up a large portion of the textbooks written for a given subject.

James Stewart is probably the best, but a nice supplementary text is Calculus Made Easy. It takes a friendlier, more intuitive approach to calculus to really give you a feel for the subject before diving into the details.
