From what I know, applied mathematicians in university try to use math to be able to solve problems in other fields like economics and engineering. But economists and engineers especially at the professor level are capable in math themselves. It seems like the people who truly understand their own field and are themselves competent in the relevant math would be better at solving novel problems than applied mathematicians who dont have much expertise in those areas like engineering or economics
