Man, there's a private american company working on fusion, and I know a guy...he has to be careful about what he says, but he thinks they're ACTUALLY close to a full on net gain prototype. Like, a year or two close. Which is absolutely fucking insane. It's he only thing that could actually solve this problem quickly-it's a very small reactor and it doesn't use any tritium and produces far fewer and far less energetic neutrons,so it's simpler and more durable than tokamaks. You have a political movement that embraces fusion, you avoid years of red tape through full blown executive orders to mandate the roll out of fusion power plants and the rapid closure of all fossil fuel plants,you slam through a carbon tax that makes gasoline cars unafforable to most people (with a few exemptions for emergency workers and others) and clean up industrial heat and you can set things right.
