I saw a thread where people were discussing qft as some "ad hoc shit that's thrown together". That's when I realized that most people in academia don't understand physics, they just know the methods.

In other words thats why no progress is being made, because people only know how to solve problems within the same realm of the method they know, and that lack of understanding will prevent new insights from being made.
