this is a butterfly (caterpillar) that is designed to look like a viper (snake). Did mutations really happen by chance for millions of years in which left the caterpillar to look like a snake? Or is their a shortcut to arrive at the desired outcome faster?

the real question you need to be asking yourself, if animals can evolve to perfectly mimic other animals, then why did humans evolve to fear them with the uncanny valley if there are no other animals which pretend to be humanoids? unless they're so perfectly blended in society that we can't tell them apart from normal humans anymore?

Possibly. A small advantage, which would be passed on, with the advantage becoming greater and greater as the dots appeared more and more like eyes.

Also you forget the fact detecting snakes is a life-saving trait and there's strong selective pressure towards it.
This means snake detection traits are promoted, even if they produce false alarms.
Were you ever scared of a garden hose? That's one of the early anti-snake detection mechanisms.
It is imperfect, but does its work well.
The caterpillar could survive by just having the same color as a dangerous snake and every small improvement could gain it more fitness.

Great 2nd grade level epiphany there. The question is why the tens of thousands of generations of fish with uneven eyes, providing 0 advantage, prospered over the ones with relatively symmetrical eyes. The answer is they didn't because evolution is a half baked theory that cannot be reproduced and was not subject to peer review when it gained popularity.

There must be some mechanism which draws their genes towards it rather than getting eaten alive. That's too coincidental. It didn't become something scarier or bigger and more alien or a mix between apex predators. It became particularly a snake.

What exactly is the question here? Changes in appearance that makes it look like a dangerous animal are advantageous, added up over time you get the pictured creature.
There are animals with longer lifecycles which have undergone similar evolution, that an insect could evolve like this seems intuitively obvious.
