Do you die if you do this

Okay, so this has been in my mind for a long time.
I know from tv, youtube and some webms posted here that if you fall parallel to water from high you die as the surface tension is equivalent to falling on concrete or some shit.
But
what happens if you fall needle style? (perpendicular to water) when doing it in a pool even from a height of 1m falling perpendicular will hurt, while olympic water jumpers fall from way higher perpendicular and it doesn't seem to bother them at all.
With this information I'd say falling needle style makes you invulnerable to water fall damage, but since I haven't seen it recomended in any place I guess that's not the case.
Assuming an infintely deep water place and a height of 5km:
Why would you die? Does the speed make the water go pressurized into your anus? What if you cover it with your hands or wear a buttplug? Would you go so deep that you would die because of pressure instead of surface tension? Also what about going head first? I guess that if you'd die going feet first going head first would be worse but I don't know.
