Space is cool and all but is there any practical application to studying the universe outside of the solar system? I get that we need to study planetary magnetospheres to better design satellites wrt to resisting potential solar flares and that asteroid mining is a thing that could happen one day, but do we get anything useful from looking at galaxies?
Are big telescopes just vanity projects for people who don't grasp that cosmology is useless?
