It's always been like this, but thanks to the internet it's much easier to just gobble up a bunch of studies at once. Furthermore, journalists are able to spend all day gobbling up studies without any thought and regurgitate them to the public.
Always think for yourself.
Medical science in particular is a fucked rabbit hole. Most psychiatric medications for example are either useless or harmful. The most effective psychiatric medications are actually... opioids and amphetamines. That's why people use them.
Regardless, as you start doing your own research, you'll find researchers who reliably put out good work. You can then find other good researchers by finding out who they collaborate with the most.
It's work to be scientifically literate, that's why people get paid to do it.
