I've read several articles and watched a few YouTube videos on EROI (Energy Return On Investment). In short, they all claimed that the decreasing efficiency of energy harvesting processes would make modern civilization impossible in the near future. Is this true or overblown fearmongering?

But than again, innovation is always around the corner, the biotic nature of oil doesn't really have the most solid historical narrative under the assumptions of real politik, maybe hydrocarbon creation is a abiotic process from high pressure and whatever stuff was stuck in there when the Earth came into its being, it almost flowing in underground rivers from pockets of production. I say this as it was 2005 that the Twilight of the Bombs was written and now its 2020, want to get super weird conspiracy, i would explore the idea of secretly creating hydrocarbons from high energy lasers or something
