We know the ancient civilizations of Göbekli Tepe and Egypt knew of the procession of the equinox which occurs every 25,772 years so there's reason to believe they have somewhat of a substantial purpose.

I mean it means something to the cultures that have mythologies built around their cycles, but in reality we're just in a solar system that behaves in a predictable way which causes seasons, the day night cycle, and equinoxes and such. It's really just arbitrary what length they are and any meaning is just derived from the mythology. A lot of myths tend to be based on historical events though so there's value in understanding them as a part of history, but we could live in a solar system where the cycles were of a different length, the constellations were arranged entirely differently, and with a different number of planets in the solar system and civilization would create myths surrounding these cycles because we've evolved to find patterns like this in everything because it helps us survive.

My guess it's comes from that symptom of every generation that thinks theirs was the best and that the good old days were the best of times. I know that somewhere in these religions is the idea that the old age, full of their prophets and mythologies, were somehow more magical and closer to god. So the modern age seems so connected to the material and disconnected from god. Thing is now is one of the best times to live because of modern medicine and history and such. The magic of the past is just the same as now - it didn't exist and it still doesn't. We lived in shit and squalor until someone somewhere decided "hey maybe we shouldn't dump our shit directly into the street" and life was improved and it keeps improving.

The idea that any other age was somehow the golden age is really just celebrating the ignorance of the past. Not that some of it wasn't great, but it was filled withmisery for most people I'm sure.

They figured it our because they used the stars to navigate and could check for minor discrepancies in the position and movement of stars. That's why they knew there were planets before they had telescopes. People didn't know what they all were or have standard units of measurement but I think a tool like a sextant is ancient and the fact that they could easily make refined measurements is evident in the stone structures that these kinds of civilizations created.
