A president is the face of a government but not the first in power. He's present in all gatherings but has no actual power of decision in any of them. That's why a president throughout his term is mostly concerned with meeting and receiving people and interest groups because his role consists in being a mediator. His role however does not consist in actually making any decision. That's not his task, never was.
If presidents were actually people of importance, why are so many of them from lowly origin.
Nixon, Reagan, Obama. Even Bush and Trump, despite both being rich families, indiciate a poor origin.
But the actual struggle for power is invisible for the average US-American. So no, Trump is not a vital aspect of our society. He's vital in terms of public reception but there's tons of possible candidates that could do his job.
